TOPOLA

Sumadija is “the heart of Serbia” and Topola is said to be the heart of Sumadija.
Therefore, it is easy to find it no matter which way you chose to head toward it.

The municipality of Topola occupies 365m2; Population: 25.292 inhabitants.
Climate: mild-continental; Altitude: 340-360m

Finding itself in the extraordinary natural surrounding with clean air and high concentration of ozone, track paths in the park of Oplenac (87ha), Topola offers excellent conditions for an active holiday.

Karadjordje’s town, built in the period 1811 – 1813 by Karadjordje Petrović, leader  of the First Serbian uprising and the first ruler of the renewed Serbian state who brought economical and cultural development to Topola. Restored quarters with tower, church with belfry and school that serves as the public library “Radoje Domanović” have been preserved until today.

At the quarters is a constant exhibition of the Karadjordje’s personal belongings and the authentic weapons from the First Serbian uprising among which is his original canon known as “aberdar” (herald). The canon misses the right handle that King Peter I used as a base for his coronation insignia. He wanted symbolically to bond his rule with the glorious rule of his grandfather Karadjordje.

The church of Our Blessed Lady, also known among people as Karadjordje’s church, is a building with the cross design feature of the base.  It was built of crushed stone and its two sided roof is covered with the old tile. Along the west portal was raised belfry, also made of stone, which at the same time served as a defense tower. Semi circled and shapely, church cupola is covered with battens – oak boards. The cupola is orthogonal from the outside, and semi circled from the inside. The church seems rather rustically, but distinguishes remarkably balanced proportions. Its exterior is whitened. The interior is richly painted and with the engraved rood screen gives out the impression of refinement.

Karadjordje’s church is the kind of a historical monument and the proof of turbulent events in the locality. Today, it is a town’s church with daily churching service.

Foundation Karadjordjević placed in the church the memorial with the names of warriors from the locality, who died in Balkan wars in 1912. and 1913.

Recently built monument to Karadjordje, work of Peter Palavinci, dominates the fortified town.
